Ideas for Lifting Others

Eileen Chesworth, Staff Writer

We all are a little happier when someone serves us. In fact, when we serve others, we feel even better. Helping others is something what God wants us to do. After all, Mosiah taught if we “are in the service of your fellow beings, ye are in the service of your God”(Mosiah 2:17). Serving others can bring you great blessings. You can serve others by leaving them a nice note, smiling or giving them a high five, and helping them with homework.

Leaving others notes is a very good way to serve. You don’t even need to sign it. You can write a note on a small piece of paper, then leave it on their desk for their next class. Then, when they come to class they will see a kind note on their desk. They will definitely feel better. Make sure you address the note to them though, or else they could mistake it for somebody else. Overall, it is a very good way to serve somebody else, especially if you are introverted and don’t like to talk to people.

You can also serve by smiling at people. Whenever someone smiles at you in the halls you feel better. Wouldn’t it be nice to do that for someone else? High-fives are even better. You don’t need to know someone to give them a fistbump. Positive physical contact is a great way to boost other’s energy and make them feel better. The reward for doing so is that you feel better too. Smiling and high-fiving is a great way to help someone out.

Helping people with anything is a great help, but it is especially needed with homework. It always feels nice to be helped with homework, especially if it is very hard. Helping little siblings or friends is very kind and well appreciated. If you know the subject they are studying it is even better because you can explain it well. Next time you see someone in your class struggling with their homework or even their classwork, go and help them do their work, and you will be surprised with how much you may be able to help them.

In the end serving others by leaving them a nice note, smiling or giving them a high five, and helping them with their homework, will make the world a better place. The person you are serving will know that they are noticed. You will gain confidence knowing that you have been helping people. As you are pushed outside of your comfort zone you will become a more positive and helpful. Service is one way to help the world while helping your friends and community.
