The Fun of Frivolity

Lighten Up!

Sometimes we just need to have fun. Making jokes, laughing out loud, doing something frivolous every once in a while is important. AHS Junior Luke Lacey said, “ If you don’t have fun then you’re going to be bored your whole life, and fun things give you good memories”. Even the most serious people need to have the enjoyment that comes with fun. It has been proven that having fun makes you smarter.

The British Cohort study found that, of the 1700 people they have tracked born before 1970, those who read for fun, not school related, improve their language skills and, surprisingly, their proficiency in math. Having fun also reduces stress, according to many studies. People who laughed less had more negative emotions compared to the ones who laughed more. Some of the best sports athletes of all time were good because they had fun while doing their job. MLB player Derek Jeter said, “You gotta have fun. Regardless of how you look at it, we’re playing a game. It’s a business, it’s our job, but I don’t think you can do well unless you’re having fun”. NBA player Michael Jordan said “Just play. Have fun. Enjoy the game”. Additionally, the greek philosopher Plato said, “You can discover more about a person in an hour of play than in a year of conversation”. Sometimes, in order to be our best selves, we need to stop thinking about work, just for an hour, and have some fun.
