Nettie Knudsen, Staff Writer

COVID-19 has got all of us cooped up in our homes. It can become tedious sometimes because online school, sleeping, and rearranging our rooms can only take up so much time. But you’re in luck! I have compiled some excellent book suggestions and reviews just for you.

Title: Stolen Thunder

Author: Shirley Climo

Review: If you like norse mythology, this is the book for you. This fictitious story follows Jack, a saxon boy living in A.D. 793. He was trained by The Bard, basically the wizard of his island, and everything is going great until he and his little sister, Lucy, are captured by berserker vikings and taken into many perilous journeys. Jack must use his skills to fight against trolls, giant spiders, and the very vikings he makes friends with.

Title: Gifted Hands
Author: Ben Carson M.D.
Review: Gifted Hands is an awe-inspiring autobiography about Ben Carson M.D. and how he became a very skilled doctor when everything was going against him. I loved this book and I loved reading it. The miracles that are recorded in this book are beautiful and faith strengthening. Jesse Jackson, an American Civil rights activist says, “He is a model to all the youth of today.” (Taken from the back of the book.)

Title: The Cedar Post
Author: Jack Rose
Review: This is a heart-warming story of a farm boy who considers himself more average than a telephone pole. He dreams of doing something really big in his life— like holding the hand of a cheerleader named Moose or winning a state wrestling title. Despite his big dreams, he feels trapped in his mediocrity and powerless to make any significant changes, that is until he meets a deaf-blind, legless old man named Ur.

Title: The Fablehaven Series
Author: Brandon Mull
Review: This book series is absolutely fantastic. It will be a great hit among younger readers. Seth and Kendra are the main characters and they spend the summer with their grandparents. Little do they know that their grandparents’ property is actually a magical creature reserve! There are good creatures and there are evil creatures. Follow all of their adventures in this five book series.

Title: The Princess Bride
Author: S. Morgenstern
Review: Many people are familiar with this classic story, but it’s a book too. A tale of true love and high adventure, pirates, princesses, giants, miracles, fencing, and a frightening assortment of wild beasts.

Title: The Sea of Trolls
Author: Nancy Farmer

I hope you enjoy any and all books that you may read. Stay healthy out there!
